BMI Calculator
Body Mass Index, or BMI uses your height and weight to generate a standardized number. It lets you and your doctor know if you are at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. If your BMI is 25 or higher, ask your doctor about simple steps you can take to help control your weight. You can also read the following to help you get started.
This BMI calculator is not intended for use by:
- those under 18 years of age,
- pregnant and lactating women.
Note: For persons 65 years and older the 'normal' range may begin slightly above BMI 18.5 and extend into the 'overweight' range.
To clarify risk for each individual, other factors such as lifestyle habits, fitness level, and presence or absence of other health risk conditions also need to be considered.
Special consideration is needed when using classification systems like BMI. It may underestimate or overestimate health risks in specific groups such as: young adults who have not reached full growth, adults who naturally have a very lean body build, highly muscular adults, adults over 65 years of age, and certain ethnic and racial groups.
