Eating Right
Learning how to make sensible food choices and eat healthier will help you manage your weight over the long run. Follow these steps toward a healthier lifestyle:
Reduce calories by making sensible substitutions
- Sip water or a no-calorie drink instead of a soda
- When you’re craving something sweet, reach for a piece of fruit instead of a candy bar
- Try low-fat cottage cheese on your salad instead of salad dressing. You’ll reduce fat and get some calcium into your meal
Eat smaller portions
- Stop eating when you feel comfortably full, not stuffed
- Pay attention to the serving sizes on food labels
Eating Out
- Make two meals out of one. Restaurant portions are often much larger than they should be. Eat only half your meal and take the other half for lunch the next day
- Ask for all sauces, dressings and gravy on the side
- Avoid foods that are described as “creamy”, “cheesy”, “battered”, or “fried”
- Ask to substitute a salad or steamed vegetables for French fries
