When baking with SPLENDA® Granulated:

  • The best results are achieved when SPLENDA® Granulated is mixed with the dry ingredients.
  • SPLENDA® Granulated can be directly substituted for sugar if the recipe calls for up to 1 1/4 cups of sugar.
  • If the recipe calls for more than 1 1/4 cups of sugar and double the amount of flour, then SPLENDA® Granulated can be directly substituted for sugar in your recipe.
  • If the recipe calls for more than 1 1/4 cups of sugar and less than double the amount of flour, then use equal parts of SPLENDA® Granulated and sugar. This indicates that the sugar is now giving the baked good volume.
  • For recipes which call for liquid sweetener, simply multiply the quantity by 4 and replace with SPLENDA® Granulated.

When baking with SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend:

Can I make jam or jelly with SPLENDA®?

Freezer jam recipes are the most successful to use with SPLENDA®. As many recipes indicate, it's important not to let your jam preparations stand at room temperature overnight. This is especially important with jams made with SPLENDA® since sucralose, the sweetener in SPLENDA®, doesn't have the same preserving characteristics as sugar.

SPLENDA® Granulated will also work in cooked jam recipes. You may find that your jam has a softer set. For better results, try boiling the jam longer than the recipe calls for. Reducing the liquid will help you get a firmer set.

SPLENDA® is not recommends for jellies. The setting agent in jelly recipes needs regular sugar to work properly.

To convert measures, you need to determine what amount of sugar is required in cups. For example, 100 grams of sugar is equivalent to 1/2 cup of sugar.

SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend requires only 1/2 the amount in recipes that ask for brown sugar, so 1/2 cup of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend is equivalent to 1 cup of brown sugar.

Can SPLENDA® be used for canning and preserving?

Canning, preserving and pickling are very successful with SPLENDA® Granulated. Good canning procedures are very important as SPLENDA® doesn't have the same antibacterial and preservative properties as white sugar.

These recipes and those created using SPLENDA® Granulated, are available at SPLENDA® Recipes.

Since SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend contains brown sugar, does that mean that it is natural?
SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend is a proprietary blend of SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) and brown sugar. Sucralose is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and results in a stable, non-carbohydrate sweetener (sucralose) that is about 600 times sweeter than sugar, but without sugar's calories. Therefore, SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend is not natural, but rather a lower calorie sweetening option, combining brown sugar and the no calorie sweetening ingredient, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, or sucralose.
What is the difference between this product and SPLENDA® Granulated?

Both SPLENDA® Granulated and SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend contain sucralose (SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener) - the no calorie sweetener that’s made from sugar, tastes like sugar but it's not sugar.

SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend gets its sweetness from a unique combination of sucralose and brown sugar. You get all of the rich flavour and aroma of brown sugar, but half the calories, sugar and carbohydrates per serving.

SPLENDA® Granulated does not contain brown sugar or common table sugar. It gets its sweetness from sucralose. The granular product also contains maltodextrin, a food ingredient commonly found in other low calorie sweeteners, which adds volume, without adding a significant amount of calories or carbohydrate per serving. On a per serving basis, one teaspoon of SPLENDA® Granulated provides 0.5 g carbohydrate and 2 calories. Foods with less than 5 calories per serving meet the Health Canada standard for no calorie foods.

Another difference is that SPLENDA® Granulated, measures cup-for-cup like sugar, whereas SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend measures ½ cup-for-cup, meaning that a ½ cup of this product is equal to the sweetness of a full cup of brown sugar.

Because SPLENDA® Granulated contains no sugar or brown sugar, it does not have all the functional properties that white and brown sugar provide, some of which are very important and desirable for certain baked goods.

SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend can be used anywhere brown sugar is used, from traditional recipes that require brown sugar to sprinkling on hot cereal.

SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend allows you to cut back on calories from sugar while still providing the browning, moistness, texture and flavour of brown sugar in baked goods - with half the sugar calories and carbohydrate.

How many calories are in SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend?

Since you need to use only ½ the volume of brown sugar called for in your recipe, SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend provides half the calories and carbohydrate of brown sugar per serving.

A serving of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend (½ teaspoon) contains 8 calories. One-half teaspoon of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend is equivalent in sweetness to 1 teaspoon of brown sugar, which contains 16 calories.

Note: A serving of sugar is considered to be one teaspoon in volume, with a weight of four grams. Sugar is entirely carbohydrate. Carbohydrates provide 4 calories of energy per gram. Thus, 4 grams x 4 calories/gram = 16 calories per teaspoon.

Where can I purchase SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend?
SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend is available at grocery and mass merchandise stores nationwide. It will be available in a 227 gram (1/2 lb.) bag that provides the sweetness of 1 lb. of brown sugar and a 454 gram (1 lb.) bag that provides the sweetness of 2 lbs. of brown sugar.
If SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend cost is half the sweetness of brown sugar, why is it more expensive than brown sugar?
SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend involves a patent-pending blending process for combining brown sugar and sucralose (SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener) to ensure uniform sweetness. It is more expensive than brown sugar because of the costs associated with blending brown sugar with the highly desirable non-caloric sweetener, sucralose.
If the process to make sucralose starts with sugar and is then blended with brown sugar for the SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend, does this mean that the SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend product is 100% real sugar?
No. Sucralose is not sugar. It is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and results in a stable non-carbohydrate sweetener (sucralose) that is about 600 times sweeter than sugar but without sugar's calories. Sucralose is not recognized by the body as a carbohydrate or sugar, and does not contribute calories. Therefore, SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend is not 100% sugar, but rather a combination of brown sugar and the non-nutritive sweetening ingredient, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, or sucralose.
How do I use SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend for baking in my own recipes?
IF YOUR RECIPE CALLS FOR THIS MUCH SUGAR: USE THIS MUCH SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend:

1/3 cup 80 mL 2 tbsp + 2 tsp 40 mL

SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend also maintains a consistent proportion of brown sugar and SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener (sucralose) in the product. Does SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend caramelize in foods?
SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend can be used anywhere one uses brown sugar in cooking and baking. The brown sugar in the product carmelizes in baked goods. The degree of carmelization is also dependent on any other sugars that may be called for in the recipe.
If I use half as much of the SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend as I would brown sugar in a recipe, will it yield the same volume?
When one uses SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend in place of brown sugar in baked goods, they should achieve approximately the same volume as one would achieve when using ordinary brown sugar.
How much brown sugar vs. sucralose is found in 1 cup of the SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend? Is it a true 1:1 ratio?
It is not a 1:1 ratio. Because Sucralose is about 600 times sweeter than sugar, the product contains more brown sugar than sucralose by weight. However, half of the sweetness of SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend comes from brown sugar and half from SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, or sucralose.
Are there specific baking tips that would need to be used in converting my own recipes when using SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend?
No. One can simply substitute half the amount of brown sugar called for in the recipe with SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend. When one uses SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend in place of brown sugar in baked goods, they should achieve approximately the same volume as one would achieve when using ordinary brown sugar.
Is SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend safe for kids?

SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener, or sucralose is already an ingredient in thousands of food products including soft drinks, juices, snack foods and desserts, all of which are suitable for children.
Has SPLENDA® Brown Sugar Blend been proven safe? What types of studies were done on this specific product?

In SPLENDA® Granulated, the bulking agent is the common food starch maltodextrin which contributes 1/2 gram of carbohydrate or the equivalent of 2 calories per teaspoon of SPLENDA® Granulated.

In SPLENDA® Packets, sucralose is combined with maltodextrin and dextrose. These ingredients contribute a total of 1 gram of carbohydrate or 4 calories per packet.

Diabetes & SPLENDA®

What are the differences in the types of diabetes?

There are three types of diabetes:

Is diabetes serious?

Diabetes is a leading cause of death by disease. If it is left untreated or improperly managed, the high levels of blood sugar associated with diabetes can slowly damage both the small and large blood vessels in the body, resulting in a variety of complications:

  • heart disease is two to four times more common in people with diabetes than without;
  • diabetes is a leading cause of adult blindness;
  • in Canada, people with diabetes account for 28 per cent of all new cases of serious kidney disease;
  • worldwide, half or more of all non-traumatic limb amputations are due to diabetes; and
  • diabetes is a major cause of erectile dysfunction. With careful management, these complications can be delayed and even prevented. The first step in preventing the onset of these complications is recognizing the symptoms that may indicate you have diabetes.
What are the risks?

Risk factors for developing diabetes include the following:

  • being age 45 or over
  • being overweight (especially if you carry most of your weight around your middle)
  • being a member of a high-risk group (Aboriginal peoples, Hispanic, Asian or African descent)
  • having a parent, brother or sister with diabetes
  • having given birth to a baby that weighed over 4 kg (9 lbs) at birth, or have had gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)
  • having high cholesterol or other fats in the blood
  • having higher-than-normal blood glucose levels
  • having high blood pressure or heart disease
What are the symptoms?

Signs and symptoms of diabetes include the following:

  • unusual thirst
  • frequent urination
  • unusual weight loss
  • extreme fatigue or lack of energy
  • blurred vision
  • frequent or recurring infections
  • cuts and bruises that are slow to heal and
  • tingling or numbness in hands or feet

It is also important to recognize that many people who have type 2 diabetes may display no symptoms.

How is diabetes treated?

Today, more than ever before, people with diabetes can expect to live active, independent and vital lives if they make a lifelong commitment to careful management of the disease. Diabetes is managed in the following ways:

  • Education: Diabetes education is an important first step. All people with diabetes need to learn about their condition in order to make healthy lifestyle choices and manage their diabetes.
  • Meal Planning: What, when and how much you eat play an important role in regulating how well your body manages blood sugar levels.
  • Exercise: Regular exercise helps your body lower blood sugars, promotes weight loss, reduces stress and enhances overall fitness.
  • Healthy Weight: Maintaining a healthy weight is especially important in the control of type 2 diabetes.
  • Medication: Type 1 diabetes always requires daily injections of insulin. Type 2 diabetes is controlled through exercise and meal planning and may require medications and/or insulin to assist the body in making or using insulin more effectively.
  • Lifestyle Management: Learning to reduce stress levels in day-to-day life can help people with diabetes better manage their disease.
How do you know if you have diabetes?
Early diagnosis of diabetes is extremely important. The earlier it is diagnosed, the sooner steps can be taken to manage the disease and prevent or delay complications. The Canadian Diabetes Association's Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Management of Diabetes in Canada recommends routine screening every three years for everyone age 45 or over and screening every year for individuals with other risk factors.
Can you prevent diabetes?
Scientists believe that lifestyle and type 2 diabetes are closely linked. This means that lifestyle is one area individuals can focus on to help prevent or delay the onset of the disease. A healthy diet, weight control, exercise and reduction in stress are important prevention steps.
What are the diabetic food choice values for SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener?

In SPLENDA® Granulated, the bulking agent is the common food starch maltodextrin which will contribute 1/2 gram of carbohydrate or the equivalent of 2 calories per tsp. Up to 6 tsp of SPLENDA® Granulated are considered a free food in a sugar restricted diet. When used in larger amounts, as in cooking or baking, these calories should be accounted for in the daily carbohydrate allowances. As an example, 5/8 of a cup of SPLENDA® Granulated contributes 15 g of carbohydrates and is counted as one carbohydrate choice.

Similarly, in SPLENDA® Packets, sucralose is combined with maltodextrin and dextrose. These ingredients will contribute a total of 1 gram of carbohydrate or 4 calories per packet. Therefore, three SPLENDA® Packets may be considered a "free" food, however, when used in greater quantities, the calories from SPLENDA® Packets should be counted as part of the carbohydrate allowance.

Tate & Lyle is the sole manufacturer of sucralose or SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener and is responsible for worldwide food and beverage ingredient sales.

You may try looking for sucralose in the ingredient list on packaging.

Is SPLENDA® safe?

SPLENDA® products are safe. The sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® Brand Products is sucralose. Health Canada has permitted the use of sucralose by all Canadians, without exception. This includes children, pregnant or nursing women and people with diabetes.

Sucralose is essentially unused by the human body, passing through the body rapidly without being broken down. In addition, studies have shown sucralose has no effect on glucose or fructose blood levels, carbohydrate metabolism, or the secretion of insulin.

Is SPLENDA® available in larger quantities?

Will consuming SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener cause me to gain weight?

No. No calorie sweeteners (such as SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener) can help you decrease calorie intake when used to replace sugar. In fact, the use of no-calorie sweetener products to help decrease caloric intake in conjunction with regular physical activity can help with weight management.

A recent small study done in 27 rats using saccharin ("A Role for Sweet Taste: Calorie Predictive Relations in Energy Regulation by Rats") alleges a link between low-calorie sweetener consumption and weight gain. However this study needs to be considered in the proper scientific context, especially since there are many other previously published research studies in humans that reached the opposite conclusion. In fact, a 2007 study published in Pediatrics®, the official journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that using sucralose (SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener) or sucralose sweetened beverages as part of an effort to decrease caloric intake by 100 calories per day, and to increase physical activity by 2000 steps per day helped to maintain and lower body mass index in the overweight children from the 111 families who participated in the "Families on the Move" program. It is important that the cause of obesity is not over-simplified, as it has many origins.
