Using your height and weight, this tool calculates your Body Mass Index (BMI) to indicate if you're underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. A healthy BMI is between 18.5-24.9, so if your BMI is over 25, you should see your doctor or healthcare professional about the possible need to better manage your weight.Source: Health Canada. The BMI calculator is not intended for people under 18 years of age, or pregnant and lactating women. For persons 65 years and older the 'normal' range may begin slightly above BMI 18.5 and extend into the 'overweight' range.
To clarify risk for each individual, other factors such as lifestyle habits, fitness level, and presence or absence of other health risk conditions also need to be considered. Special consideration is needed when using classification systems like BMI. It may underestimate or overestimate health risks in specific groups such as: young adults who have not reached full growth, adults who naturally have a very lean body build, highly muscular adults, adults over 65 years of age, and certain ethnic and racial groups.
