There are no foods that are completely forbidden for people with diabetes. Control carbs to help keep your blood sugar in check.
Carbohydrates are our body's main energy source. Carbs break down into sugar in our blood, which is then stored and used for energy. Diabetes affects your ability to transport sugar in the blood to its storage area. This means that eating too many carbs results in high blood sugar levels, while eating too little can result in low blood sugars. To help control your blood glucose levels, eat similar amounts of healthy carbs at around the same time every day.

Many foods contain carbs—from bread to milk to lollipops—only some sources are healthier than others. Healthy carbs provide energy (calories), vitamins, minerals and sometimes fibre. Less healthy carbs, such as sugar, provide calories but little, if any, other nutritional value. Healthy carbs are important for energy and good nutrition so make them a part of your daily balanced diet.
Healthy carbs include:
- Whole grains (whole-grain breads, cereals, crackers, pastas, etc.)
- Low-fat or fat-free dairy products
Less healthy carbs include:
- Regular sugar-sweetened pop
- Fruit or sport drinks with added sugar
- Cookies, cakes, pies
- High-calorie, high-fat dairy desserts (ice cream)

The key to living well with diabetes is keeping blood glucose levels within your recommended range throughout the entire day. Your doctor or registered dietitian can help you determine your ideal daily carb intake. Staying within your range can help you feel better and help keep you healthy. That's why carb counting counts.

- Read nutrition facts tables and note the grams of carbohydrate per serving
